The Oncology Institute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuta" (IOCN) was established in 1929 by Professor Dr. Iuliu Moldovan, bearing the name of “The Institute for Cancer Research and Prevention”. It is one of the first cancer centers in Europe. “The Institute for Cancer Research and Prevention” was the first research unit that made a clear aim, as we can see in its title, at “the study of cancer prevention”, in an era when the concept of prevention was only vaguely implemented.
This is the reason why, ever since 10.08.1990, it will bear the name of The Institute of Oncology "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuta" Cluj-Napoca.

Between 1929-1940, Professor Constantin Stanca receives the function of director of the Institute. He was a skillfull gynecologist, who established a valuable school of oncologic gynecologists, which contributed significantly to the study of genital cancers, as show the specialized medical publications of those years.
Furthermore, we owe Professor Stanca the import from Paris of the first sources of radium, destined for the radiologic therapy of cancers.

In 1933, Professor Stanca leads the editorial team of the ”Cancer” magazine, the first oncologic publication in Romania.

Between 1940-1957, the Institute is lead by a new director - Professor Rubin Popa, a famous anatomo-pathologist, who oriented the research activities towards anatomo-clinical aspects. His initiative lead to the publishing of several scientific works, monographies and valuable papers, that were true milestones in the study of cancer at that time.

However, the „modern” era of the Institute is, without a doubt, connected to the personality of Professor Dr. Ion Chiricuţă, who will take the lead from 1958. A graduate of the prestigious surgical school of the „Spitalul Brâncovenesc” in Bucharest, a disciple of Profesor Iacob Iacobovici, Professor Chiricuţă began to build the new wing of the Institute on Republicii street, nr. 34-36 and finished it in 1965.

Due to the Professor’s efforts, we now have a structure of the Institute that is based on three original ideas in Romania, for the times they were issued:

Even nowadays, these concepts are the cornerstones of the Institute and will always be the premises for progress in our activity.

To honor Professor Ion Chiricuţă, the Institute has received, in 1990, the name of: Oncology Institute “Prof. Dr. I. Chiricuţă” Cluj-Napoca.

The Oncology Institute “Prof. Dr. I. Chiricuţă” is a comprehensive cancer center of national public interest, with juridical personality, subordinate to the Ministry of Public Health and is authorized by the Romanian Government Decision nr. 862/2006, regarding the organization and functioning of the Ministry of Public Health.

The Institute provides preventive, curative and palliative medical services in the oncologic field and, at the same time, carries on several activities in education and research. Moreover, the Institute has the obligation of organizing continuous medical education activities (EMC) for doctors and nurses.
 

Our mission is to contribute to the decrease of effects that cancer has in Romania. In this respect, we implement projects that deal with patient care, prevention and research, continuous education of all professionals involved, as well as of the public.
 

Our vision for the future is to become the top cancer center both at national and regional level. This is entirely possible, considering the exceptional quality of our organization, the excellence in patient care, the research quality, as well as the education provided.
